Event Details

This three hour workshop is for all grade levels and directors of group ensembles. Elise
Sobol, author of An Attitude and Approach for Teaching Music to Special Learners,
2001 lst edition, 2008, 2nd edition, will share her extensive experience and unique
contributions to the field of music in special education. Ms. Sobol will demonstrate
her facilitative style of teaching foundations of music education for students of varying
challenges and learning styles. This multimodal technique ensures successful inclusion
and performance of students with learning disabilities, speech/language impairments,
those with sensory deficits, orthopedic and other health impairments, behavioral
challenges, gifted and talented with specific disabilities (twice-exceptional) and English
language learners. Teachers will receive practice in designing instructional adaptations
and assessments for learning tailored to each specific need that will help their students
reach optimal learning. Each adaptation will make the student feel safe, secure, and
successful and will enrich the music program for all students.

Ms. Sobol will address task analysis, arts integration across the curriculum, strengthening
literacy through music, newest special education legislation, classroom management
techniques, sequential lesson planning, teaching special learners critical thinking skills
with direct applications to grade level expectations. Threaded throughout the workshop
will be enjoyable activities of consistent relevance, a display of reference materials, and
hand-outs for immediate use in the classroom.

A light breakfast will be served from 8:30-9:00 AM.

Preregistration is required.  Please bring a photo ID for building security.
